Tomatoes are also known to have high quantities of lycopene but watermelon is the champ! Plus this summer it’s a lot more tasty to chomp away on a slice of a refreshing watermelon.

And since it is summer, watlermelon will boost your skins natural SPF, so you are giving you skin lot’s of TLC while you eat your fruit salad packed with slices of watermelon.

And here’s another tip, research also discovered that watermelon that has been kept cooled in a refrigerator contains more lycopene then fresh picked watermelon that hasn’t been stored in a cool area.

Broccoli Sunscreen

You know, with this long lasting summer weather (I’m in the northeast region of the US), I guess we should keep on posting about sunscreen and the scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland seem to be coming up with new advances in natural skin care.

Tests on six volunteers exposed to pulses of UV radiation showed the broccoli extract sunscreen reduced sunburn symptoms by up to 78 percent! So what is this broccoli sunscreen made of?

The ointment was made from extracts of three-day-old broccoli sprouts rich in protective compounds called sulphoraphanes. Unlike a normal sunscreen, it does not absorb UV light to prevent it entering the skin. Instead, it works inside the body by boosting the production of enzymes that protect cells against UV damage and the risk of skin cancer. Protection is said to last several days.

broccoli.jpgThis discovery is great in general for all but especially great to protect against skin cancer. I wonder when we’ll start seeing broccoli sunscreen in the skin care market…

Now I understand why my mom would slap me silly so I would eat my broccoli… thanks mom!

What Is… Peeling?

Part of our mission is to get more men involved in skin care.  This means to a big extent introducing new concepts, even new vocabulary to help spread the word.  This time we will take care of “Peeling”.  You may have heard of it, and the only thing that might popped in your mind was a fruit!  Don’t worry we’ll explain it short and simple:

Peeling is the process by which the outer layer of the epidermis is removed to free the skin from impurities and improved blood flow.  This process uses corrosive substances to treat persistent conditions.  You can also use peeling to reduce skin spots, small scars and deep wrinkles.

You can opt for a home peeling treatment using a lotion based on camomile, calendula, fennel (hinojo) and sage.  You rub the skin until it becomes pink.  Immediatly after that, apply a mask with wet bandage using the lotion, leaving it for 25 minutes.
