What Are Razor Bumps?

Razor bumps, also known as pseudofolliculitis barbae are a body inflammatory reaction that appears when people with tightly curly hair shave. The hair recently shaved, briefly surfaces from the skin and then curls back into it, becoming ingrown.  This causes red bumps, skin irritation and pain.

Razor bumps are common to black people, due to the nature of their hair (studies have shown that actually, 10% - 80% of adult black men have razor bumps), but it can also appear on people with different skin color. 

Do I Need Treatment for Razor Bumps?

Men who suffer from this condition tend to shave a lot and with an bad shaving technique, often using methods that cut the hair below the surface, like shaving against the grain, plucking the hair with tweezers, using double and triple razors, or the misuse of electrolysis.

Although this is not a serious medical condition, it sometimes can lead to cosmetic problems such as scarring, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation, secondary infection, and keloid formation.  However, this can be avoided by first getting to know your skin, and applying proper treatment.
